Is this toll (Linkt / E-Toll) text a scam?

A message says you’ve got an unpaid toll and must pay now to avoid a fine. Toll texts are one of the most common scams in Australia right now. Here’s how to tell.

What this scam looks like

⚠️ Example of a scam message“Linkt: You have an outstanding toll of $4.60. Failure to pay will incur a $65 fine. Pay now: linkt-au-pay[.]com”

The tell-tale signs

What to do

  1. Don’t tap the link. Linkt won’t text a link demanding urgent payment to avoid a fine.
  2. Check for real: open the Linkt app, or type linkt.com.au yourself and log in to see any genuine balance.
  3. Delete the text. If you paid through the link, ring your bank now on the number on your card.
  4. Report it at scamwatch.gov.au.

The three rules that stop almost every scam

  1. If they rush you, it’s a scam. Real companies never hurry you. "Act now", "your account will be locked today", "final notice" — that pressure is the tell.
  2. Never use the door they give you. Don’t tap the link or ring the number in the message. Go in your own way — open the official app yourself, or ring the number on the back of your card.
  3. Your codes are yours. Full stop. Those six-digit text codes are keys to your accounts. No genuine company will ever ask you to read one out.

Common questions

Will Linkt text me about an unpaid toll?

Linkt may send account reminders, but it won’t threaten an immediate fine and push you to a payment link. Always check your balance by logging in through the official Linkt app or linkt.com.au — never through a link in a text.
