Is this Amazon / Prime “charge” call or text a scam?

A recorded call or text says your Amazon or Prime account has been charged a large amount — press 1 or tap here to cancel. It’s a trick to get you talking to a “refund” scammer. Here’s how to tell.

What this scam looks like

⚠️ Example of a scam message“Your Amazon Prime membership has been renewed for $99.99. If you did not authorise this, press 1 to speak to an agent and cancel.”

The tell-tale signs

What to do

  1. Don’t press any buttons and don’t tap the link. Just hang up or delete it.
  2. Check for real: open the Amazon app or type amazon.com.au yourself and look at Your Orders and Prime membership.
  3. Amazon won’t ask for remote access, gift cards, or your banking to give a refund.
  4. Report it at scamwatch.gov.au.

The three rules that stop almost every scam

  1. If they rush you, it’s a scam. Real companies never hurry you. "Act now", "your account will be locked today", "final notice" — that pressure is the tell.
  2. Never use the door they give you. Don’t tap the link or ring the number in the message. Go in your own way — open the official app yourself, or ring the number on the back of your card.
  3. Your codes are yours. Full stop. Those six-digit text codes are keys to your accounts. No genuine company will ever ask you to read one out.

Common questions

How do I check a real Amazon charge?

Never use the number or link in the message. Open the Amazon app or type amazon.com.au yourself, sign in, and check Your Orders and your Prime membership. Any genuine charge shows there.
