Is this “your computer has a virus” call a scam?

Someone rings out of the blue — Telstra, NBN, Microsoft or “tech support” — saying your computer is infected or your internet will be cut off, and they need to log in remotely to fix it. This is always a scam. Here’s why, and what to do.

What this scam looks like

⚠️ Example of a scam message“This is Telstra technical support. We’ve detected a virus sending errors from your computer. I’ll need you to turn it on so I can guide you to fix it before your internet is disconnected.”

The tell-tale signs

What to do

  1. Hang up. Telstra, NBN and Microsoft don’t ring you out of the blue about viruses.
  2. Never let anyone who called you take remote control of your computer.
  3. If you already let them in, turn the computer off, and ring someone you trust (or me) to check it.
  4. Report it at scamwatch.gov.au. For identity worries, call IDCARE free on 1800 595 160.

The three rules that stop almost every scam

  1. If they rush you, it’s a scam. Real companies never hurry you. "Act now", "your account will be locked today", "final notice" — that pressure is the tell.
  2. Never use the door they give you. Don’t tap the link or ring the number in the message. Go in your own way — open the official app yourself, or ring the number on the back of your card.
  3. Your codes are yours. Full stop. Those six-digit text codes are keys to your accounts. No genuine company will ever ask you to read one out.

Common questions

Could it really be Telstra or NBN?

No genuine provider cold-calls to say your computer has a virus and asks to log in remotely. If you’re worried about your service, hang up and ring the provider yourself using the number on a bill or their official website.
